copyright and mixtapes?

I initially told the publication that it wouldnt be in my interests to sign the contract. While Ive been researching what would be fair for me to ask for in a revised contract, the publisher is now doing some research of his own. He is looking at revising their agreement to allow photographers to maintain copyright while allowing the publication to have exclusive rights to the images for 24 months. Some how that feels like a much better agreement than the initial one. Any thoughts?
